St Mary’s Catholic Academy approached us to make a new website for them, knowing already that we had worked with Our Lady & St. Chad Academy on their website, who along with St Marys Primary is affiliated with Pope John XXIII Multi Academy Company, for which we also created their website.
The original website, like many other outdated school websites, was overrun with pages that lead to nothing, and multiple places to download important files that needed to be collated in one area, were sporadically placed throughout web pages. For this site to be a success it needed to be clear in what content was on the page and straight forward navigation to the desired areas, as a Primary School also, a friendly and somewhat cheerful output was neccessary.
This was achieved by using multiple lighter and darker variants of colour used in the logo to tie the top of the website with the bottom, whilst keeping the background clear and using a serif font as the main typeface to create a clean and easy to read look. Being a Primary School, in comparison to Secondary Schools, its important to take account of the user base that could potentially use the website, and the fact that children are quickly learning how the web works and where to visit. The simplicity in design should reflect this when trying to accommodate for everyone in a design.
The policies and publications were given their own pages so they were all available for quick viewing, as with most other pages the key to the design was to make sure the pages were clearly labelled and the content that sat on the page was relevant. The website utilises other features such as a blog to post news, upload pages for homework to be designated to multiple classes and an Events Calendar to highlight upcoming important dates, holidays and events. Something that St Mary’s did that was also fun to work on, is having the Staff List page recreated by their pupils to show teachers portraits, it’s always a good idea to add a little something different to a website that can make it stand out and highlight what that websites cause is about.
The targets for this project were simple. The site needed to be easy to maintain, provide areas for dynamic content and make sure Ofsted are happy. When creating websites for education we know how important Ofsted compliance is, especially for newly formed Academies. We know exactly what Ofsted expect, so we tailor design and structural decisions around these targets.

VOiD have helped to create a very professional looking website which has given us much more functionality. I am sure that our parents and other stakeholders will feel more engaged and appreciate the increased sense of community involvement which the new website will bring. - Shona Ashcroft, School Business Manager of St Marys Catholic Primary Academy
