“How Much for an App?” The Real Costs.

One of the questions we get a lot here at VOiD is how much does a mobile application cost. It’s always an exciting time to speak to new and existing clients in regards to app ideas. It’s always great to hear what new ways people think mobile apps can help them, each brief presents its own unique challenges and approaches. Cost is always a factor when deciding whether to pursue an idea or if it stays exactly as that, an idea. Here at VOiD, we have come up with a cost-effective solution to help smaller businesses with their app ideas, as well as offer our clients a more bespoke approach, the latter costing more for the unique, and often complex functionalities included.

As app developers, we will give clients honest answers and opinions every time. If we feel that an app might not be the direction to go for you, we will tell you. The app development partnership is exactly that, it’s a partnership where we help you get the best return on your investment, and no-one appreciates time wasting.

There will be things going on behind the scenes that you don’t think about. Development, designing, testing, deployment and marketing even server side needs. Think of mobile application design like a jigsaw, each piece must fit together perfectly to complete the puzzle. If one of these pieces is missing, then the app will fall at the first hurdle.

When it comes to the idea for an app it’s important to have some consideration into what platform you are going be developing for. Phones and Tablets present their own design challenges. Each offering a different screen resolution for you to consider how users will interact with your app. For mobile applications, we develop for iOS and Android Phones, the Windows platform has been removed from development for a few reasons, we discussed this in an earlier blog post.

Testing is done in house with our team of experienced staff. Often with larger apps, we like to get focus teams to be part of the design, usually made up of your target demographic. Or we do soft launches to make sure everything is going smoothly. Once the testing is done we will help you launch your app by giving you the best advice on how to hit your target market and your goals.

Everything we build is built with future proofing in mind, there would be little point in developing an Application if every time you wanted an update we had to re-write entire sections of the application. With this in mind, we offer a tailor made package to ensure this doesn’t happen.

So to the real question, what does an app cost? Firstly we’d like to mention that not all apps have to be bespoke. We offer template solution that are designed specifically for your brand or business that incorporate a range of features tailored to what you want to achieve. These usually start around £300 – £500 up front with a continued monthly service charge. This helps us create a quick, targeted app for a small business at a price they can afford with no compromises on the features.

Apps aren’t a one size fits all solution, pick what’s best for you and your business, first. You can see the above table for how we break it down.

It really depends on what you’re looking for. And the easiest way for us to make it clear is by giving a few examples.

£5,000 – £15,000 for entry-level applications and games with basic functionality such as product catalogues, staff driven data collection and content syncing from a server. Example, promoting a business or brand with lots of information to data-driven enterprise apps.

£15,000 – £30,000 for medium to large applications & games which incorporate elements of hardware, data analytics and game design. Usually, apps that have large amounts of data being sent back and forth. Example, a taxi rank app similar to Uber (we get asked for this a lot! You wouldn’t believe it) or an app that links to a bespoke piece of hardware.

£30,000 plus for anything beyond this. Example, a new social media platform or an enterprise solution for your company with multiple offices and 1000s of staff.

Of course depending on what platforms you want to target and how integrated you want your app with different third party or proprietary services you might see these examples change.
A common misconception when it comes to apps is that they cost a few hundred to develop. This is because we are used to using them. They are part of everyday life and usually cost the end user a few pounds (at the worse), or most of the time nothing at all.

When thinking of a mobile application it’s important to take into consideration the old saying “you get what you pay for”. We firmly stand on the line of value for money and the best quality. However, there’s one thing we won’t be beaten on, and that’s customer service. It’s one of the reasons why in 2016 we have had 100% positive feedback from every single client we’ve worked with. We create lasting relationships to help our client get better results for their money.

So, we hope this has demystified the processes and costs involved in making apps. Just remember one thing, we tailor all of our projects to the goals of the client and there’s a cost effective target driven approach for everyone.
